  6. Welcome to The Universe According to Virgil Reality, featuring the 
  7. amazing and sometimes wacky world of science.

  10. INSTALLING THE UNIVERSE ACCORDING TO VIRGIL REALITY
  11.  
  12. The installation program lets you install The Universe 
  13. According to Virgil Reality. You must have the CD in 
  14. the CD-ROM drive to run the program.
  15.  
  16. If you are installing under Windows 95 and Autoplay is turned 
  17. on, you do not need to manually run the installation program 
  18. to install this program. The first time you insert the CD 
  19. into the CD-ROM drive, Windows 95 will automatically start 
  20. the installation program. 
  21.  
  22. Once installed, every time you insert the CD into the CD-ROM 
  23. drive the Autoplay feature of Windows 95 will automatically 
  24. start The Universe According to Virgil Reality.
  25.  
  26. To install the program (if Autoplay is disabled):
  27.  
  28. 1. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  29. 2. Click the Start button and choose Run. 
  30. 3. Type X:\SETUP.EXE (replace X: with the letter that 
  31.    represents your CD-ROM drive) in the command line and 
  32.    press ENTER. 
  33. 4. Choose Yes to install the program. The Universe According
  34.    to Virgil Reality is automatically installed to a Kids' 
  35.    World folder on your hard disk.

  38. STARTING AND CLOSING VIRGIL
  39.  
  40. Click the Start button, then click Programs and Kids' World. 
  41. Click Virgil Reality to start the game. Make sure the CD is in
  42. the CD-ROM drive. 
  43.  
  44. To exit Virgil:

  46. Press Shift+Esc or Alt+F4, or click on Factoid's Exit icon.

  49. KEYBOARD COMMANDS

  51. The following keyboard combinations can be used to replace mouse
  52. movements for certain activities and functions.

  77. TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

  79. If you have difficulty installing or running the program, please read
  80. the section below before calling our Technical Support phone line.
  81. By checking the few items listed below, you may be able to solve
  82. any difficulty you are having on your own.
  83.  
  84. If you are still having difficulty, call Technical Support at 
  85. 972-498-8025. Support is available Monday - Friday from 8:00 am
  86. to 9:00 pm, and on Saturday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm Central Time.

  91. the Kids' World web page (www.kidsworld.com). By accessing this 
  92. web page, you can download the latest technical support information 
  93. along with demos of current and future products, register your
  94. products online, and participate in contests and chats with the
  95. celebrities and individuals involved in our products.

  97. Problem:
  98.    The program seems to run slowly.
  99.  
  100. Solution:
  101.    As with any program running under Windows, the speed and the 
  102.    smoothness of the program is dependent on the speed of the hardware 
  103.    that it is running on. Hardware configurations that affect 
  104.    performance are: the amount of memory and the speed of the video 
  105.    card, the processor type, the amount of real memory and the transfer
  106.    rate of the CD-ROM drive. You may be able to improve the performance
  107.    of the program running on your computer by upgrading one or all of 
  108.    these elements of your computer system, depending on what you
  109.    already have.

  111.    If you are running on a computer with minimum system requirements, 
  112.    make sure you have a permanent swap file of at least 5 MB set up in 
  113.    Windows.
  114.  
  115. Problem:
  116.    When I try to run the program, I get a "Not enough memory" message.
  117.  
  118. Solution:
  119.    On an 8 MB system, the program requires 5-10 MB of virtual memory. 
  120.    For instructions on setting virtual memory, please consult your 
  121.    Windows documentation. Make sure that there are no other
  122.    applications open while trying to run the program. Also, check 
  123.    your CD to make sure it is clean and free of any scratches, 
  124.    smudges, or fingerprints.

  126. Problem:
  127.    The program does not display properly.
  128.  
  129. Solution:
  130.    Make sure you have a video card running in 640╫480 or 800╫600 mode 
  131.    with 256 colors. Also, make sure that you have the proper display 
  132.    driver installed. A display with more colors or running at a higher
  133.    resolution also will work with The Universe According to Virgil 
  134.    Reality.

  136. Problem:
  137.    The program is working, but I donÆt hear any sounds.
  138.  
  139. Solution:
  140.    Make sure your sound card is installed and working properly. You can
  141.    check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound utility in 
  142.    the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in the Windows 
  143.    directory and click Test. 
  144.  
  145. Problem:
  146.    The sound or video skips during the program.
  147.  
  148. Solution:
  149.    Make sure you have at least 8 MB of RAM. Also, make sure that an 
  150.    expanded memory manager (such as EMM386, QEMM or 386MAX) is not 
  151.    reserving memory that Windows and the program will need to run 
  152.    correctly.

  154. Problem:
  155.    I canÆt get the MIDI files to play. (IÆm not getting any music.)
  156.  
  157. Solution:
  158.    Most sound cards are not set up to play MIDI files unless you have a
  159.    MIDI peripheral device attached to your computer. To set your sound
  160.    card so that MIDI files will play without a MIDI peripheral device
  161.    attached, follow the steps below.
  162.  
  163.   To change your MIDI settings under Windows 95:
  164.       1. Select the Start Menu.
  165.       2. Choose Settings and open the Control Panel.
  166.       3. Double click the Multimedia icon and select the MIDI tab.
  167.       4. Select the MIDI setup file. (Check your sound card 
  168.          documentation for the correct setup file.)
  169.       5. Click the OK button and exit the Control Panel.
  170.  
  171. Problem:
  172.    The sound and video are not synchronized properly.
  173.  
  174. Solution:
  175.    Make sure that you are running the program on a 486 33 MHz or
  176.    better IBM-compatible computer with at least 8 MB of RAM. Also,
  177.    verify that all other programs in Windows are closed.
  178.  
  179. Problem:
  180.    The sound breaks up or has a lot of static.
  181.  
  182. Solution:
  183.    You may need to change the DMA setting on your sound card. Please
  184.    check the documentation for your sound card for instructions on 
  185.    how to change the settings. We recommend setting the 16-bit DMA 
  186.    to the same channel as the 8-bit DMA.

  188. Problem:
  189.    The volume is too low or too high.
  190.  
  191. Solution:
  192.    You can adjust the volume using the + and ¡ keys within the 
  193.    program.
